Transportation & Environment
This City of Arcata needs to support and fund projects that improve the livability of Arcata and address the climate crisis that we are facing. Finding ways to encourage people to find alternatives to driving is vital and consistent with our community’s values. This means creating and funding a robust public transportation system and investing in safe bike and pedestrian paths, and expanding the City’s bike share program. Transportation should be accessible and available to all.
As a council member, I have worked to make Arcata streets more welcoming to pedestrians, cyclists, and other modes of transportation. I supported the adoption of the City’s complete streets policy and have participated in the planning for several major pedestrian improvement and traffic calming projects throughout the city including the Old Arcata Rd improvements, 8th/9th St one ways, Sunset/LK Wood intersection, community meetings for K/11th street improvements, walk audits with Dan Burden, and numerous other grants and projects.
As a Council member I supported the merger of AMRTS and HTA to streamline bus service in Arcata. The addition of the Green and Gold route increased ridership helping link North Arcata with the Cal Poly Campus. I will continue to advocate for increased bus service and the creation of jobs and housing near transit.
In addition to making the downtown more pedestrian friendly, Arcata should continue to build and maintain local trails and bike paths. These trails connect residential areas of Arcata with the downtown and allow more people to travel freely via bike, walking, and other modes of kinetic transportation. Arcata should prioritize the creation of parklets and shared streets or “woonerfs” in the city.
